Section 1: Position Summary

The Staff Accountant is responsible for assisting with general ledger month end close process for the core Retirement business. Prepare journal entries and maintain respective accounting schedules. Work with management to support reporting and analysis.

Section 2: Job Functions, Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close for the core Retirement line of business, including revenues, expenses and lower risk balance sheet accounts.
  • Prepare journal entries and related supporting documentation and analyses.
  • Use various systems to compile reports for monthly close tasks and processes.
  • Prepare account reconciliations and investigate variances.
  • Prepare and maintain narrative documentation over processes, procedures, and controls.
  • Ensure compliance with internal control requirements.
  • Assist in providing support for external audit requirements and maintenance of Sarbanes-Oxley compliance reporting and documentation.
  • Proactive identification of accounting issues and improvement of existing processes.
  • Support recording transactions between affiliated entities.
  • Assist with special projects for management and other financial functions within the department as required.
  • Work with business leaders to properly account for expenses.
  • Work with other departments to ensure efficient and effective monthly closes and financial reporting.
  • Responsible for protecting, securing, and proper handling of all confidential data held by Ascensus to ensure against unauthorized access, improper transmission, and/or unapproved disclosure of information that could result in harm to Ascensus or our clients.

Section 3:  Experience, Skills, Knowledge Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting required.
  • 0-2 years of accounting experience.
  • Advanced excel skills are required.
  • Familiarity with accounting software and databases.
  • Ability to work within tight timeframes.
  • Highly analytical and detail oriented with an aptitude for problem solving.
  • Independent and possesses excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to streamline and improve accounting processes.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with other functional areas to achieve overall organizational objectives.
  • Independent self-starter.
