Business Unit Overview
This position is part of Novanta Advanced Surgery (AS), which develops devices and accessories that enable doctors to operate using minimally invasive techniques. We produce video management systems, insufflators, medical pumps, and tubing, making diagnosis and treatment easier for everyone.
The successful candidate will become a member of our Novanta R&D Design Center in Brno, which provides a wide range of R&D services for various Novanta business units. Job Summary
The Engineering Technician – Hardware will play a key role in supporting hardware development activities within our Brno R&D laboratory. This position is responsible for managing lab operations, including equipment maintenance, inventory control, calibration, and compliance with safety and quality standards. The role also involves supporting prototype builds, coordinating with suppliers and EMS partners, and assisting engineers with testing and troubleshooting. This is a hands-on, detail-oriented position requiring strong organizational skills, technical expertise, and the ability to collaborate effectively across multiple functions.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Supporting hardware development activities, relevant component and services purchase processing and suppliers and EMS partners communication
- Serve as the local point of contact for the Brno laboratory, overseeing its maintenance, upgrades, and expansion.
- Ensure compliance with ESD, safety, and quality standards in all laboratory operations.
- Oversee laboratory inventory and equipment management; collaborate with purchasing and finance teams to ensure all assets are properly identified, tracked, and registered in accordance with company standards.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives for laboratory workflows, equipment utilization, and inventory management.
- Support onboarding of new laboratory equipment, including installation, setup, and user training.
- Assist in preparing and managing laboratory budgets, contributing to cost optimization initiatives.
- Manage calibration schedules and perform or coordinate calibration of laboratory equipment to ensure accuracy and compliance with standards.
- Maintain accurate calibration records and ensure audit readiness for all laboratory equipment.
- Conduct periodic lab safety audits and risk assessments to ensure compliance with internal and regulatory standards.
- Collaborate with the Hardware Team Manager to support prototype production and component procurement; coordinate with EMS partners and other service providers to ensure timely and efficient prototype builds.
- Support engineers in hardware testing, troubleshooting, and validation activities as needed.
- May participate in price negotiations for electronic components and services during early project phases; strong negotiation skills are considered an advantage.
Required Experience, Education, Skills and Competencies
- Completion of secondary education in Electronics Engineering or a related technical field is required.
- A minimum of 3 years of relevant industrial experience is preferred.
- Experience with a variety of documentation programs (particularly MS Excel, MS Word and Adobe Acrobat).
- Hands-on experience with electronic measurement instruments and soldering/rework techniques.
- Experience with calibration procedures and audit preparation.
- Highly proficient in spoken and written English.
- Excellent organizational skills with a strong drive for structure and repeatability.
- Knowledge of departmental procedures and practices across Engineering, Supply Chain, Production, IT, and Quality.
- Technical background with the ability to collaborate and work effectively across functions.
