About the role

Title:

Principal Structural Engineer

Job Posting Description

KBR is proud to be the Principal Design Partner on the North Western Program Alliance (NWPA) a long‑standing partnership between the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP), Metro Trains Melbourne, KBR and John Holland.

Established in 2017, NWPA has successfully delivered around $3B worth of transport infrastructure for the state and its communities. Off the back of this success, LXRP has awarded us a further five-year extension, giving our team a strong and sustainable pipeline of major transport projects across Melbourne through to 2027.

With Victoria’s transport sector booming, joining KBR to work on NWPA is an exciting next step in your career. You’ll help shape the community through city‑defining projects including Melbourne Airport Rail – Stage 1, and the Ruthven and Seaford level crossing removals, with more diverse projects already in development. These alone include six major viaduct‑style bridge designs, alongside a robust future program.

At KBR and NWPA, our goal is to be recognised as “the place to be.” This is reflected in the way we work and support our people:

  • Opportunities to grow and diversify through collaboration with engineering, digital, stakeholder engagement, construction and more.

  • A truly collaborative, no‑blame culture focused on solving challenges together.

  • Genuine support around workloads and wellbeing.

  • Access to internal and external development programs, including our 101 training series.

  • A flexible hybrid working model—work from home, our head office, or project sites.

The Opportunity

As NWPA continues to grow, we’re looking for passionate, delivery‑focused professionals to help keep Victoria moving. We now have an opportunity for a Principal Structural Engineer to join our team.

You’ll contribute to our bold, future‑focused approach to heavy rail infrastructure design. While you’ll begin your journey with NWPA, this is a permanent role within KBR, opening doors to iconic infrastructure projects across Australia.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Plan, schedule and deliver structural engineering designs, adapting techniques and standards to suit complex challenges.

  • Manage intricate design elements, including conflicting requirements, unconventional materials, and high‑coordination scenarios.

  • Ensure all commercial, cost, safety and legal considerations are integrated into design specifications.

  • Mentor and guide junior engineers, designers and drafters.

What You’ll Bring

We’re looking for someone with a bachelor’s degree in structural engineering and extensive experience in infrastructure projects—ideally within a multidisciplinary environment. You will also bring:

  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills

  • Creative and innovative thinking

  • Attention to design detail

  • A passion for engineering solutions

  • Experience coordinating across project teams

  • Flexible work options (start/finish times, WFH, flex time)

  • Project incentive schemes
