JOB SUMMARY

Delivers care under the direction of a physician and functions as an integral member of the Orthopaedic Clinic patient care team. The trainer works closely with the supervising physician by assisting in maintaining clinic flow, patient education, and assisting with office procedures. The athletic trainer is also responsible for carrying out other clinic duties and clerical responsibilities as detailed below, supporting clinic operations and delivering high-quality, safe, patient-centered care in collaboration with a supervising physician and the clinical care team.

Job Summary
We are seeking a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) to join our Sports Medicine team at Vanderbilt Orthopaedics Nashville West. This role supports Sports Medicine physicians in a busy outpatient clinic and plays a key role in delivering efficient clinic flow, hands-on patient care, and exceptional service to patients of all activity levels. This position is well-suited for an athletic trainer who values teamwork, accountability, adaptability, and patient-centered care.

Key Responsibilities
• Educate patients on injury prevention, activity modification, and risks associated with sports participation
• Perform injury and condition assessments and communicate findings to supervising physicians
• Administer therapeutic, conditioning, and rehabilitation exercises
• Educate patients on treatment plans, rehabilitation programs, and return-to-activity guidelines
• Complete patient intake, documentation, and clinical preparation prior to provider evaluations
• Assist physicians with procedures such as joint aspirations and injections, wound care, and home exercise instruction
• Manage concussion protocols and ensure compliance with established standards
• Apply and remove casts and splints and assist with DME fittings and education
• Support efficient patient flow and clinic operations
• Perform additional duties within the athletic training scope of practice as directed

Qualifications
 

Required
• Board of Certification (BOC) Certified Athletic Trainer
• Current Tennessee Athletic Trainer License or eligibility

Preferred
• One or more years of clinical athletic training experience
• Background working with collegiate or competitive athletes
• Experience with or willingness to learn casting, splinting, concussion management, and DME

Work Environment
This position is based in a busy outpatient Sports Medicine clinic supporting physicians who care for athletes ranging from recreational to competitive levels. The team values efficiency, teamwork, adaptability, and high-quality patient-centered care.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Educate the patients about risks associated with participation and specific activities using effective communication techniques to minimize the risk of injury and illness.

  • Performs assessment of patient’s injury, illness, or condition, performs appropriate evaluation in accordance with accepted procedures and shares assessment findings with the supervising physician.

  • Administers therapeutic and conditioning exercise(s) using standard techniques and procedures to facilitate recovery, function and/or performance.

  • Educate patients in the treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning of injuries, illness, and/or conditions using applicable methods and materials to facilitate recovery, function, and/or performance.

  • Perform patient intake including, where appropriate, obtaining/documenting the following prior to the physician’s examination.

  • Provide assistance to the physician, per the physician’s directions, with joint aspirations/injections, wound care, and home exercise instruction.

  • Perform durable medical equipment (DME) fittings and application and cast removal and application.

  • Perform other specified tasks within the athletic training scope of practice as directed by the physician.

TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES

  • PATIENT DOCUMENTATION: Demonstrates understanding of patient documentation in practical applications of a difficult nature. Possesses sufficient knowledge, training, and experience to be capable of successfully delivering patient documentation services.

  • PATIENT EVALUATION: Demonstrates knowledge of performing patient evaluations. Demonstrates experience in the evaluation process. Demonstrates a solid understanding of internal control concepts and experience in applying them to the diagnosis. Possesses sufficient knowledge, training, and experience to be capable of successfully delivering patient evaluations.

  • ATHLETIC TRAINING: Possesses sufficient knowledge, training, and experience to be capable of successfully delivering results without requiring support and instruction from others.

  • TREATMENT IMPLEMENTATION: Demonstrates understanding in providing treatment consistent with physician prescription and established plan of care. Able to modify treatment plan as needed to demonstrate provision of skilled therapy services including progression of treatment throughout course of care, and revision of treatment interventions of goals not met.

  • PATIENT EDUCATION: Demonstrates comprehension of health education. Possesses sufficient knowledge, training, and experience to be capable of providing patient health education services.
