Job Description

About the Proton Therapy Center at Cincinnati Children’s

Cincinnati Children’s is at the forefront of developing innovative cancer treatments, and its proton therapy program uses pencil-beam technology, the most advanced form of radiation therapy available today. This technology allows radiation to conform to the tumor while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues, reducing both short-term side effects and long-term complications—especially critical for pediatric patients. In addition, Cincinnati Children’s is the only academic medical center worldwide with a dedicated research gantry for both basic and clinical research, built with a $24 million investment to advance proton therapy science. This vision and investment allows for groundbreaking clinical and translational research, such as the world’s first clinical trial of FLASH proton therapy.

UC Health and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine have formed a key partnership with Cincinnati Children’s in the development and operation of the proton therapy center. This collaboration brings together expertise in clinical care, medical education, and research to advance proton therapy for both pediatric and adult cancer patients. The partnership leverages the strengths of each institution, enhancing treatment options and fostering groundbreaking research in proton therapy. Together, they are shaping the future of cancer care through innovative radiation treatments.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The “Medical Physicist, Clinical Faculty Track” is a critical member of the tri-partite mission of the institutions – clinical excellence, training and education, and research and service.

Clinical Excellence – Medical physicists play a vital role in radiation oncology by ensuring that treatments like proton therapy are delivered safely and accurately. They work with radiation oncologists to design treatment plans that target tumors while protecting healthy tissues. Their responsibilities include calibrating radiation doses, maintaining equipment, and overseeing quality assurance. This ensures that patients receive the most effective and safe treatment possible.

Education and Training - Medical physicists play a crucial role in teaching and training future professionals in radiation therapy and medical physics. They instruct medical residents, dosimetrists, and radiation therapists on radiation safety, equipment use, and treatment planning. They also mentor students and fellows in clinical techniques, ensuring the next generation is well-prepared. Through these efforts, they help advance the field and uphold high standards of care.

Service and Scholarly Activity - Medical physicists contribute to the field through research, publications, and involvement in professional organizations. They work on projects to enhance radiation therapy and develop new technologies. Additionally, they publish research, present at conferences, and share insights with the medical community. By serving on committees and boards, they help set industry standards and promote best practices, ensuring ongoing advancements in patient care and the profession.
