The Opportunity:
GFL Environmental is currently seeking an Environmental/Project Coordinator based out of Nova Scotia to support our various operations throughout Atlantic Canada.
The position contributes to the effective operation of various municipal solid waste landfills, composting, and septage facilities through conducting environmental inspections and monitoring for compliance with regulatory requirements. In addition to working in collaboration with other business units and departments, this position assists team members in their duties, as required, to meet service expectations, goals, and objectives.
Job Description:
Under the direction of the Director of Landfill Operations and Environmental Compliance - Atlantic Canada, the incumbent will be responsible for the following:
Conduct environmental inspections and monitoring at GFL facilities for compliance with regulatory requirements.
Collect soil, leachate, surface water, and groundwater samples in relation to operational approvals as per industry practices.
Establish, monitor, and track various environmental performance indicators.
Increase effectiveness of GFL’s Environmental Best Management Practices and awareness of GFL’s Site Operational Plans.
Collaborate with GFL staff on various environmental issues.
Liaise with consultants, contractors, regulatory inspectors, and site personnel.
Prepare and review comprehensive environmental reports and summarize the information for review.
Support General Managers with emergency response related to environmental incidents.
Assist in the development of environmental key performance indicators and the uploading and maintenance of GFL’s environmental management system related to site activity.
Assist with the planning and implementation of various infrastructure improvements and capital investment projects.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
A degree or diploma from a recognized university or college in science or engineering.
3-5 years’ experience in a similar position preferred.
Demonstrated experience in collaboration with regulators.
Demonstrate the ability to work within a multidisciplinary team environment.
Experience with environmental related monitoring and reporting.
Professional attitude, punctual, assertive, and personable.
Demonstrated problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinker who can multi-task, is a self-starter, is very organized, and demonstrates and promotes ethical behavior.
High level of sound and independent judgment and reasoning.
Ability to respond in pressure situations with a calm demeanor and high sense of urgency.
Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, and database management systems.
Valid driver’s license and current insurance must be insurable under company policy.
Flexibility to travel throughout Atlantic Canada when required.
NOTE: This position is a Hybrid opportunity with both an office and home office work environment. Working days are from Monday to Friday. Hours may change to meet the demands of the business.
