Your Opportunity
One Permanent Full Time Position.
The Senior Energy Trader (Ontario & NYISO) is responsible for managing the commodity exposure and commercial performance of the Ontario generation fleet.
Reporting to the Desk Head, Supply & Trading, this role sits at the intersection of generation operations, fuel procurement, gas storage and transport optimization, battery dispatch and complex contractual structures. It also includes speculative trading aligned with physical flows and financial products across the Northeastern power markets.
The ideal candidate is highly commercial, analytically strong, and comfortable navigating complex power and gas contracts while coordinating across trading, operations, risk, and counterparties.
Key Responsibilities
Manage and optimize commodity exposure (power, gas, transport, storage) for Ontario thermal and battery assets.
Develop and execute dispatch and fuel optimization strategies aligned with contractual obligations and market conditions.
Oversee natural gas procurement, storage utilization, and transport strategy to support reliable and economic fleet operation.
Act as a key interface between Supply & Trading, asset operations, the Risk, Credit, and Commercial Teams, and external counterparties.
Manage Northeastern speculative trading, including physical flows, cash trading and transmissions rights.
Provide commercial insight, scenario analysis, and recommendations to senior trading leadership.
Education:
Minimum bachelor’s degree specializing in Statistics, Mathematics, Finance, Economics, Engineering or related field
Preference towards graduate degrees, CFA, FRM or other technical designation holders
Experience:
8+ years of front‑office experience in power and/or natural gas trading or asset‑backed portfolio optimization, with direct accountability for commercial performance and P&L.
Proven experience managing generation fleet commodity exposure, including dispatch, fuel procurement, gas transportation and storage, and basis risk across IESO, NYISO, and interconnected gas markets.
Strong working knowledge of Ontario and Northeast U.S. power markets, including real‑time and day‑ahead pricing, congestion, transmission rights, ancillary services, and fuel‑to‑power economics.
Advanced commercial leadership, contractual fluency and market judgment
Working Conditions:
This is a Calgary in office- based role.
Relocation support will be provided if required.
Occasional intra travel may be required.
