Job Description: Project Engineer EC&I

Company: Weir Minerals

Industry: Mining (Comminution)

Location: Baden, Switzerland

Position in the organization: The Project Engineer reports to the Manager Electrical Engineering (Carlo Zanna) and during project execution via the project organogram to the Project Manager.

Band: 2B

Purpose of Role:

The Project Engineer EC&I acts as the first point of contact for the electrical, control, and instrumentation (EC&I) scope on Enduron Vertical Stirred Mill execution projects, from engineering through to project delivery. This role ensures that all EC&I deliverables are technically sound, compliant with applicable standards, and delivered on time in coordination with the mechanical and process engineering disciplines.

The Project Engineer EC&I acts as a key interface between the project management function and the engineering disciplines (mechanical, electrical, process), ensuring that customer-specific requirements are accurately translated into actionable engineering work packages and that project deliverables are tracked and completed on time. This role requires a structured approach to reviewing and approving vendor documentation, defining EC&I specifications, and ensuring that the electrical, instrumentation and control system design meets both Weir standards and customer-specific requirements. This is a growth position for a technically educated professional who is newer to the stirred mill industry and will be built-up through hands-on project involvement and mentoring. The role operates within established Weir engineering procedures and standards but requires professional judgement and discretion to resolve technical issues, adapt solutions to project-specific circumstances, and balance quality, cost, and schedule constraints.

By fulfilling these responsibilities, the Project Engineer EC&I will play a key role in strengthening Weir’s project execution capability and to the required quality and safety standards for the Enduron Vertical Stirred Mill product line

WEIR supports a flexible and hybrid working model, enabling employees to balance office-based collaboration with remote work where appropriate.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Safety First: Demonstrate 100% commitment to Weir's zero-harm behaviours in support of a world-class safety culture.
  • EC&I Project Execution: Own the EC&I engineering scope on execution projects from order intake through to project delivery. Define the EC&I work breakdown structure, track deliverables, and ensure alignment with the overall project plan and delivery milestones. Work within agreed project budgets and cost targets, monitoring expenditure against milestones and flagging deviations.
  • Electrical & Control System Specification: Define and review specifications for motors, variable frequency drives (VFDs), soft starters, control panels, cabling and earthing and others. Ensure compliance with IEC, local standards and customer specifications.
  • Instrumentation & Automation: Specify and coordinate the selection of process instrumentation, define I/O lists, and support the development of PLC/HMI control logic and SCADA integration in collaboration with the automation team or external partners.
  • Documentation: Prepare and maintain EC&I project documentation including P&IDs, cable schedules, instrument lists and O&M manuals.
  • Technical Reviews: Participate in design reviews and risk assessments. Identify risks and execute mitigation strategies.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with the mechanical and process engineering team, Project manager and other key stakeholders to ensure seamless integration of the EC&I scope within the overall mill system delivery.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve EC&I project execution processes, commissioning procedures, checklists and test protocol, and tools.

By fulfilling these responsibilities, the Project Engineer EC&I will play a crucial role in maintaining Weir Comminution’s position as a leader in the industry, driving innovation, and ensuring the successful execution and continuous improvement of our customers delivery experience.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong technical foundation in electrical, control, and instrumentation engineering.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to manage multiple EC&I deliverables in parallel across projects
  • Strong communication skills, ability to coordinate with vendors, internal teams, and customer EC&I departments effectively
  • Structured problem-solving capability, particularly for drive systems, control logic, and instrumentation
  • Willingness to travel internationally (approx. 10%)
  • Working proficiency in English; German is an advantage

Education & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical, Automation or Control Systems Engineering (or equivalent technical discipline e.g. HF, Technical school)
  • Experience in EC&I project engineering (preferably in mining, heavy industry or rotating equipment preferred but not mandatory)
  • Good understanding of electrical power distribution, motor and drive systems, control panel design and process instrumentation
  • Experience with PLC/HMI platforms (e.g. Siemens, Rockwell/Allen-Bradley) and SCADA systems is an advantage
  • Familiarity with EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, or similar is a plus
