Job Description

The Company

PayPal has been revolutionizing commerce globally for more than 25 years. Creating innovative experiences that make moving money, selling, and shopping simple, personalized, and secure, PayPal empowers consumers and businesses in approximately 200 markets to join and thrive in the global economy.

We operate a global, two-sided network at scale that connects hundreds of millions of merchants and consumers. We help merchants and consumers connect, transact, and complete payments, whether they are online or in person. PayPal is more than a connection to third-party payment networks. We provide proprietary payment solutions accepted by merchants that enable the completion of payments on our platform on behalf of our customers.

We offer our customers the flexibility to use their accounts to purchase and receive payments for goods and services, as well as the ability to transfer and withdraw funds. We enable consumers to exchange funds more safely with merchants using a variety of funding sources, which may include a bank account, a PayPal or Venmo account balance, PayPal and Venmo branded credit products, a credit card, a debit card, certain cryptocurrencies, or other stored value products such as gift cards, and eligible credit card rewards.  Our PayPal, Venmo, and Xoom products also make it safer and simpler for friends and family to transfer funds to each other. We offer merchants an end-to-end payments solution that provides authorization and settlement capabilities, as well as instant access to funds and payouts. We also help merchants connect with their customers, process exchanges and returns, and manage risk. We enable consumers to engage in cross-border shopping and merchants to extend their global reach while reducing the complexity and friction involved in enabling cross-border trade.

Our beliefs are the foundation for how we conduct business every day.  We live each day guided by our core values of Inclusion, Innovation, Collaboration, and Wellness. Together, our values ensure that we work together as one global team with our customers at the center of everything we do – and they push us to ensure we take care of ourselves, each other, and our communities.

Job Summary:

What you need to know about the role

PayPal POS is transforming how SMB merchants accept payments, and our quality function is transforming with it. We are evolving to Quality Engineering: quality built in, not bolted on. As a Staff Quality Engineer, you will be the technical cornerstone of that shift, owning automation architecture, establishing QE standards, and enabling POS teams to ship with confidence. This is an engineering leadership role, not a test execution role.

Meet our team
The POS Test Engineering team owns Quality Engineering for PayPal POS, a merchant-facing platform spanning mobile apps and hardware devices for SMBs worldwide. We are a centralized QE function at an inflection point: actively moving to an automation-first, shift-left culture. You will join as the senior technical voice, working closely with the Senior Manager of POS Test Engineering and embedded feature teams across the SMB org.

Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Acts as a project or system leader, coordinating the activities of other engineers on the project or within the system
  • Determines the technical tasks that other engineers will follow
  • Actions result in the achievement of customer, operational, program or service objectives
  • Proactively improves existing structures & processes
  • Exercises judgement in reconciling diverse and competing priorities (time, quality, complexity risk) to identify optimal solutions to problems
  • Notices patterns and condenses repetition into densely meaningful generalized solutions
  • Collaborates with management to set/improve standards for engineering rigor
  • Trusted to represent PayPal, Inc to the outside world via interactions with partners, customers, or industry organizations

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Responsibilities & Preferred Qualifications:

Your way to impact

You will define what great quality engineering looks like for PayPal POS. Through automation architecture, CI/CD quality gates, testability standards, and cross-team technical influence, you will directly reduce defect escape rates, accelerate release confidence, and enable POS teams to ship faster without compromising merchant experience. Your impact will be measured not by what you personally deliver, but by the engineering capability and quality culture you establish across the team and the organization.

Your day-to-day

  • Own mobile automation architecture for PayPal POS across iOS and Android including framework design, test identification strategy, suite decomposition (feature, P0 regression, full regression), CI/CD pipeline integration, and BrowserStack management

  • Define testability standards in partnership with feature engineering teams from requirements through delivery, ensuring acceptance criteria explicitly include test type expectations (unit, snapshot, functional, end to end) before development begins

  • Architect the shift-left quality model for POS and design quality signals that drive decisions

  • Drive adoption of QE standards across teams without direct authority. Work with architects to write technical proposals, build consensus, and influence how POS feature teams think about quality ownership.

  • Lead AI-assisted quality engineering for POS, building on PayPal's existing AI testing roadmap: this includes owning the integration of AI-assisted test case generation, automated test gap analysis.

  • Mentor and grow QE engineers on the team. Act as the de facto technical lead, reviewing automation architecture, raising the bar, and developing the next generation of senior QEs.

  • Represent POS Test Engineering in engineering forums, architecture reviews, and cross-functional quality discussions across the SMB org and PayPal QE community.

What do you need to bring

We know the confidence gap and imposter syndrome can get in the way of meeting spectacular candidates. Please don't hesitate to apply even if you don't match everything.

  • 7+ years in quality engineering with clear progression toward staff-level technical scope and influence

  • Deep hands-on expertise in mobile automation for iOS and Android. This is the primary technical bar for the role.

  • Proven experience building automation frameworks from the ground up; not just contributing to existing frameworks

  • Hands-on experience with BrowserStack for test execution, test management, and coverage analysis at scale

  • Experience with mock-based testing strategies. Recording, maintaining, and replaying API mocks for pipeline stability independent of environment availability

  • Experience working in or leading a team through a QA-to-QE transition. You've helped shift a team from manual-heavy to automation-first before and know what the resistance looks like.

Differentiators:

  • Familiarity with AI-assisted testing tooling. Test generation agents, automated coverage gap analysis etc.

  • Background in payment, fintech, POS, or hardware-adjacent product environments, understanding the testing challenges of hardware/software systems will accelerate your impact here.
