About the Role

As a Staff Instrumentation Firmware Engineer (P4), you will be a senior individual contributor and key technical resource working on our next-generation Instrumentation platform. This role is intended for engineers who operate with a high degree of autonomy, solve complex and ambiguous technical problems, and influence software and system architecture beyond their immediate scope.

You will contribute to critical and strategically important programs, working closely with silicon, FPGA, systems, and applications teams to deliver robust embedded software for high performance ATE platforms. This position does not require formal people management but does carry clear expectations for technical leadership and mentorship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, architecture, and implementation of complex embedded software components for a SOC targeted for the Automated Test Equipment market.
  • Serve as a technical authority for embedded firmware related to high speed serial interfaces, including SerDes based data paths.
  • Drive hardware–software codesign, including definition and review of software visible architecture, register maps, and programming models.
  • Develop, review, and maintain low level firmware, device drivers, and APIs used across internal teams and by customers.
  • Provide technical leadership during early bring up, FPGA validation, and silicon debug, resolving system level issues that span hardware and software.
  • Develop applications in ATE domain.
  • Mentor and guide ‑experiencedjunior engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and architectural discussions.
  • Collaborate cross functionally to ensure software solutions align with product requirements, system constraints, and customer use cases.

Required Technical Capabilities (Must Have)

  • Advanced, hands-on experience with C/C++ in embedded systems.
  • Strong understanding of bare metal and/or RTOS based firmware architectures.
  • High Speed Digital Interfaces
    • Demonstrated expertise in SerDes configuration, and calibration.
    • Strong working knowledge of JESD204 (B/C) concepts, including lane management, synchronization, data formatting, and error handling.
  • Deep experience working at the intersection of silicon, FPGA, and embedded software.
  • Proven ability to debug complex, multi‑domain system issues.
  • Ability to decompose ambiguous system level problems into robust software solutions.
  • Experience influencing architecture and design decisions beyond individual features.

Desirable / Preferred Qualifications

  • Exposure to and hands-on experience with Pin Electronics (PE) architectures or ATE related systems.
  • Experience supporting pre-silicon or early silicon environments (FPGA prototypes, emulation, bring up platforms).
  • Familiarity with SPI, JTAG, and other control and debug interfaces.
  • Experience in Board level schematic understanding and reviews
  • Experience contributing to customer facing reference software, documentation, or application support.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering (Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems, or related discipline) with 7+ years of experience.
  • Significant industry experience in embedded software development, with demonstrated impact on complex products.
  • Hands-on, practical expererience is required; this role is not suitable for purely academic backgrounds.

P4 (Staff Engineer) Level Expectations

At ADI, a P4 engineer is expected to:

  • Act as a go to technical expert, in their domain.
  • Work independently on complex, high impact technical challenges.
  • Influence technical direction across projects or teams without formal authority.
  • Raise the technical bar through mentorship, design rigor, and engineering judgment.

For positions requiring access to technical data, Analog Devices, Inc. may have to obtain export  licensing approval from the U.S. Department of Commerce - Bureau of Industry and Security and/or the U.S. Department of State - Directorate of Defense Trade Controls.  As such, applicants for this position – except US Citizens, US Permanent Residents, and protected individuals as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3) – may have to go through an export licensing review process.
