Perform basic welding work on county equipment, vehicles, and bridges under supervision of senior welders. This position can be assigned to any division as needed in Public Works.--
Job Description
Field Work - 80%
- Perform a variety of semi-skilled work in the operation of welding, heavy equipment, machinery, trucks, tools in construction, and repair activities, and will be required to perform a certain amount of manual labor.
- Prepare surfaces to be welded by grinding, sanding, filing, or whatever is necessary to make joints fit properly, select proper electrodes and current to make a strong and neat weld.
- Operate a variety of hand and power tools including gas and arc welders, grinders, power sanders, chisels, hammers, and other tools common to welding repair work.
- Must perform work in a courteous, safe manner.
- Drive to locations for field repair.
- Perform minor mechanical repair and maintenance work on vehicles as assigned.
- When contact with the public is required, the employee must maintain a courteous, helpful attitude.
Administration - 10%
- Maintain accurate written records of work performed and materials used.
- Follow verbal and written instruction.
Other Duties as Assigned - 10%
- Must be able to follow instructions from senior employees and maintain working relationships with co-workers.
- Respond to and work extraordinary hours during emergency events.

Required Qualifications
Required Education
- High School Diploma/GED
Required Work Experience
- One year experience in gas and electric welding.
Or
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid Colorado Commercial Driver’s License, Class A with tanker endorsement required or ability to obtain license within specified time frame agreed upon hire.
- Welding Certification: Welding D1.1 Structural Certification required or ability to obtain within six months. Structural certification to include flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead.
- Ability to be MSHA certified.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must be able to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public, to respond to official inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.
Must effectively present information in one-on-one situation with the public, subordinates, and supervisors.
Add and subtract two-digit numbers and multiply/divide with 10’s and 100’s. Perform these operations using units of money, weight, measurement, volume, and distance.
Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
Must have demonstrated proficiency in two of the following areas OR a basic familiarity with and experience working with a variety of: tracked hydraulic excavator, bulldozer, front end loader, scraper, tandem axle truck, asphalt paver, backhoe (smaller than a John Deere 510), compaction equipment, skid steer, and motor grader.
Must have skill in the use of welding equipment.
Must have working knowledge of the procedures, materials, and equipment used in welding repair.
Must have working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions common to the position.
SMAW skills required.
Oxy/acetylene cutting skills required.
Candidate must pass a background check prior to employment start date.
Candidate must pass a substance use screening prior to employment start date.
This position will participate in random substance use screening.
Candidate must pass a physical demands evaluation post offer screen compatible to this position.

The employee will frequently stand, walk, or squat. The employee will occasionally climb, crawl, stoop, kneel, carry, or reach overhead. Employee will regularly perform the following: reach angularly, wrist flexion/extension, elbow flexion/extension, supination/pronation, and grasp. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to hazards, temperature change, fumes and airborne particles and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to extreme heat and cold temperatures. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
This position is non-exempt from the minimum wage and overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore eligible for overtime pay.
