The pay range is $135,000.00 - $243,000.00

The Director Guest & Assortment Strategy is accountable for defining and operationalizing the enterprise assortment vision for Marketplace by a pyramid to drive guest relevance, digital experience excellence, and profitable growth. This role leads the ongoing relationship with the internal 1P Merchandising roundtable and serves as the strategic connective tissue across merchandising, digital, finance, Partner Acquisition & Onboarding, Partner Growth & Management, and data science teams.

Key Responsibilities:

Marketplace Assortment Strategy: Define and continuously refine the long-term assortment framework aligned to guest demand, category roles, competitive positioning, and enterprise growth objectives. Establish guardrails for brand and product inclusion across owned and partner channels. Identify white space opportunities and category expansion pathways using performance data, search behavior, trend analysis, and competitive benchmarking.

Merchandising Roundtable Leadership: Serve as the primary strategic liaison to the internal 1P Merchandising roundtable. Translate guest insights and digital performance data into actionable assortment recommendations. Facilitate prioritization decisions, resolve trade-offs, and align stakeholders on investment focus areas.

Guest-Centric Digital Experience: Partner cross-functionally to deliver a seamless and inspiring digital shopping experience. Ensure product breadth and depth support guest missions, seasonal storytelling, and trend-forward positioning. Influence content, search, and navigation strategies to maximize assortment productivity and guest engagement.

Strategic Planning & Performance Management: Establish KPIs to measure assortment effectiveness. Monitor competitive landscape shifts and proactively recommend strategic adjustments. Drive annual and multi-year planning cycles with a forward-looking, insight-led perspective.

Cross-Functional Influence & Change Leadership: Collaborate across merchandising, marketplace/partner teams, finance. Champion guest-first decision making while balancing operational feasibility and profitability. Share strategies, updates, and performance clearly with leadership, peers, and cross-functional partners to align and drive impact. 

About You:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) required. 

  • 10+ years of experience in merchandising, inventory management, forecasting, or product selection (including open-to-buy management). 

  • 5+ years of eCommerce experience; marketplace/3P expertise strongly preferred. 

  • Proven business acumen with a track record of building industry relationships and leveraging data analytics to inform decisions. 

  • Expertise in business planning, forecasting, and defining KPIs to drive execution of business strategy. 

  • Entrepreneurial and performance-driven, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, startup-like environment. 

  • Resilient and adaptable, with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to bring clarity and decisiveness in complex or changing situations. 

This position will operate as a Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement based on Target’s needs. A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member’s core role will need to be performed both onsite at the Target HQ MN location the role is assigned to and virtually, depending upon what your role, team and tasks require for that day.
