About the role
HB Studios is a driving force in the creation of sports video games and the studio behind PGA TOUR 2K Golf – presently working on Console and PC. We have an opportunity for a Junior Level Designer to join our team of developers, creators, and fans, who are passionate about the art and process involved in video game development.
As a Junior Level Designer, you will contribute to the creation of both authentic and fictional environments, ensuring that all course designs meet the highest standards of visual reverence, and gameplay quality.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in recreating authentic golf courses for in-game use from real-world reference data.
- Build original courses from scratch, executing all phases of level creation from concept to implementation.
- Design and implement supplementary level designs on top of existing courses to support gameplay needs such as Challenges gameplay.
- Flesh out a course’s visual needs in detail and work with artists to establish final appearance.
- Provide feedback on our user-facing Course Designer tools based on your hands-on experience using them.
- Use the provided toolset and operate on the outlined processes for handling working files, implementing levels, vetting check-ins, etc.
- Assist in ensuring that tools and features work as intended and coordinate with QA team to log bugs and write reproduction steps.
- Contribute to the studio’s growing philosophy of game design and how we make games.
Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
- Typically up to 2 years of industry experience in Game Design or relevant experience in level design and/or golf course design.
- An understanding of golf course design principles from a playability perspective.
- Familiarity with the public Course Designer tools in the PGA TOUR 2K series is a strong asset.
- Familiarity with the Unity game engine is a secondary plus.
- Ability to learn new software and technical processes.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- A collaborative mindset with the ability to constructively receive, iterate on, and apply feedback form peers and mentors.
