Job Description

Van Andel Institute (VAI), a world-class biomedical research institute, located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is dedicated to improving human health. We are pioneers in the fight against cancer, Parkinson's, and other diseases. We are committed to inspiring the next generation of scientists and educators.

A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Maulik Patel in the Department of Metabolism and Nutritional Programming at the Van Andel Institute (VAI). The Patel Lab studies fundamental aspects of mitochondrial biology using Caenorhabditis elegans as a model system. Our research focuses on understanding mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) biology, including mechanisms regulating mtDNA copy number, maintenance, and inheritance.

The postdoctoral researcher will investigate key questions in mitochondrial genome regulation and function. Projects in the lab combine genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and imaging approaches in C. elegans to uncover how mtDNA copy number is controlled and how mitochondrial function is maintained across development and physiological states. In particular, there is strong interest in reconstituting aspects of mtDNA regulation in vitro using purified components and developing biochemical assays to study protein–DNA interactions relevant to mitochondrial genome maintenance. Candidates will have the opportunity to develop independent research directions aligned with the lab’s broader goals.

The successful candidate will be trained in both established and cutting-edge technologies and will work in a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary environment. The Van Andel Institute is a leading independent nonprofit biomedical research and education organization, home to a vibrant scientific community engaged in fundamental and translational research.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field.

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: mitochondrial biology, genetics, C. elegans research, molecular biology, cell biology, or biochemistry.

  • Experience with protein purification, biochemical reconstitution, and/or in vitro assays (e.g., protein–DNA interactions) is highly desirable.4

  • Demonstrated ability to independently design and execute research projects.

  • Strong record of scientific productivity (e.g., first-author publications).

Description of a Successful Candidate:

  • A collaborative and motivated scientist who actively engages with lab members.

  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Your Next Steps:

If you are a person who has demonstrated success in these areas, we would love to have a conversation with you! The first step in beginning this conversation is starting your application.

In your application, provide the following in a single combined pdf:

  • cover letter outlining why you are interested in this role and how this position aligns with your goals.

  • current resume

  • names and contact information of 3 professional references (we will check with you before checking references)

About Van Andel Institute

Established in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1996 by the Van Andel family, VAI is now home to nearly 500 scientists, educators and support staff, who work with national and international collaborators to foster discovery. The Institute’s scientists study the origins of cancer, Parkinson’s and other diseases and translate their findings into breakthrough prevention and treatment strategies. Our educators develop inquiry-based approaches for K–12 education to help students and teachers prepare the next generation of problem-solvers, while our Graduate School offers a rigorous, research-intensive Ph.D. program in molecular and cellular biology.

VAI is committed to excellence through broad participation and diverse perspectives. We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds and experiences who share our passion for innovation and collaboration.

Van Andel Institute is an Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA) Employer.

As Van Andel Institute is a drug free employer, all prospective new employees undergo a urinalysis/drug test as part of our pre-employment process.  This is a 7-panel drug screen and it includes testing for Marijuana, Cocaine, Amphetamines, Opiates, PCP, Barbiturates, and Benzodiazepines.
