Job Summary
The Director of Field Placements and Pro Bono Programs oversees student placements in the Law Center’s robust Field Placement program and serves as the faculty advisor for the Law Center’s Public Interest Law Society (PILS). The Director coordinates with the Assistant Dean for Experiential Education to chart the strategic direction of the Field Placement and Pro Bono Programs. This position is a twelve-month faculty appointment on the Law Center’s Professional Practice faculty track.
Job Responsibilities
Field Placement Program Administration and Instruction: (65%)
Administer the Law Center’s Field Placement Program, including teaching and evaluating students in the various field placement courses.
Create, maintain, and update field placement course materials and host supervisor instruction materials, including online asynchronous course materials. Recruit, develop and maintain relationships with field placement hosts and site supervisors. Conduct site visits and site training of field placement host supervisors.
Conduct the mid-semester and end-of-semester evaluation processes with students and site supervisors.
Engage with regional and national law externship and clinical communities.
Meet with lead informational and counseling meetings for interested students.
Monitor and ensure compliance with applicable ABA standards (particularly Standard 304) related to externships.
Supervise law students’ individual research and writing as needed as it pertains to their field placement experience
Participate on law school faculty committees as assigned by the Dean.
Teach an additional experiential, simulation or doctrinal course or seminar as assigned by the Assistant Dean of Experiential Education and the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.
Pro Bono Program Administration: (30%)
Serve as faculty advisor and primary liaison to the Public Interest Law Society (PILS).
Coordinate and facilitate the success of PILS, including all PILS activities. Provide guidance and advice to student PILS leadership to ensure the sustainability and success of organization.
Create and maintain a network of pro bono opportunities for interested law students.
Track student participation and hours worked in pro bono programs and opportunities.
Engage with non-profit organizations and government agencies to create pro bono volunteer opportunities.
Engage with the pro bono and access to justice efforts of state and local bar associations that enhance pro bono and volunteer service opportunities for students.
Other duties as assigned: (5%)
Qualifications:
Applicants must have a Juris Doctor or equivalent degree from an accredited institution, and a license to practice law in any jurisdiction, and at least 5 years of experience. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong academic and/or career counseling background.
