About the role

About Our Team

We are a small, independent engineering team within the larger Elsevier organization, with members located in Bosnia and the United States. Our diverse and collaborative team operates with a high degree of autonomy while partnering closely with product, design, and engineering stakeholders across Elsevier.

We are responsible for maintaining and extending one of Elsevier’s leading nursing and health education web application products. By empowering faculty to create their own quiz questions or leverage Elsevier’s rich library of content and assessments, we help create meaningful and focused learning experiences that ultimately support improved patient outcomes.

About the Role

As a Software Engineer III, you will contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of front‑end applications built with Angular, as well as support back‑end services built with Node.js. You will work closely with senior engineers, product managers, and designers to deliver high‑quality features and improvements.

This is a hands‑on engineering role requiring strong technical fundamentals, a collaborative mindset, and a commitment to writing clean, maintainable code.

You will also have opportunities to contribute to process improvements, participate in code reviews, and support junior engineers through guidance and peer‑level mentorship.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain front‑end features using Angular and TypeScript.

  • Contribute to server‑side development using Node.js and Express.

  • Participate in the design and implementation of RESTful APIs.

  • Write high‑quality, testable code following engineering best practices.

  • Diagnose and resolve bugs and performance issues across the stack.

  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to improving coding standards.

  • Collaborate closely with a distributed team across time zones.

  • Support junior engineers through informal mentorship or pairing when needed.

  • Contribute to technical discussions, planning, and estimation activities.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Experience & Technical Skills

  • 3–5+ years of professional software engineering experience.

  • Hands‑on experience with:

    • Angular 8+ and TypeScript

    • Node.js with Express

    • HTML/CSS

    • MariaDB or equivalent relational databases

    • Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs.

    • Strong understanding of modern front‑end and back‑end development practices.

    • Proficiency with Git/GitHub, JIRA, and Confluence (or similar tools).

Quality & Process

  • Good debugging and problem‑solving skills with attention to detail.

  • Exposure to Agile/Scrum methodologies.

  • Familiarity with test‑driven development (TDD) or unit testing best practices.

Soft Skills & Teamwork

  • Strong communication skills—both verbal and written—when working with distributed teams.

  • Ability to take direction, learn quickly, and work independently when needed.

  • Willingness to collaborate and contribute positively to team culture.

Optional, but Nice to Have

  • Experience with UI/UX collaboration

  • Experience working in an education‑focused or content‑heavy product environment.
