About the role

Cyber Development Underwriter
Manchester | Leeds | Birmingham (Hybrid Working – mix of Office, Home and Broker Meetings)

Help shape the future of SME Cyber insurance !

With cyber risk accelerating and demand surging, we’re investing heavily in our UK Cyber proposition — and we’re looking for an experienced Cyber Development Underwriter to play a pivotal role in that journey.

This is a high-impact, broker-facing role where you’ll combine technical cyber underwriting expertise with commercial development, helping us grow a fast-expanding SME Cyber book and strengthen our position as a go-to market for UK brokers.

You’ll be part of our dedicated Cyber Centre of Excellence, working closely with brokers across the UK to build pipeline, win new business and deliver sustainable underwriting performance.

Why this role?

  • Be part of a major cyber growth strategy, with a clear ambition to grow the book to £35m GWP by 2030

  • Work with excellent broker relationships, high-quality submissions and real autonomy

  • Blend technical cyber underwriting with visible broker engagement and development

  • Join a people-first organisation that genuinely invests in underwriting expertise and career progression

What you’ll be doing:

  • Underwriting complex SME cyber risks within agreed authority and appetite

  • Owning and developing a panel of brokers, positioning Markel as a preferred cyber partner

  • Driving pipeline creation, new business conversion and income delivery

  • Actively engaging brokers through meetings, development plans, training and events

  • Supporting broker education around cyber risk and insurance solutions

  • Maintaining accurate CRM data to enable data-led engagement and reporting

  • Contributing to team performance reporting and cyber trading activity

  • Coaching and supporting junior underwriters through referrals and mentoring

  • Working closely with internal partners to deliver strong outcomes for brokers and customers

What we’re looking for:

You’ll be a commercially minded cyber underwriter who enjoys being visible in the market and influencing growth.

  • Proven experience underwriting Cyber risks, ideally within the SME space

  • Strong knowledge of cyber exposures, coverage and underwriting discipline

  • Demonstrable success in building and developing broker relationships

  • A confident communicator who can trade, influence and win business

  • Comfortable working with CRM systems and digital underwriting platforms

  • Motivated, collaborative and keen to help build a market-leading cyber proposition

What’s in it for you?

  • Competitive salary plus generous annual bonus

  • Up to 16% employer pension contribution

  • Private medical & dental cover

  • Income protection and life assurance

  • Electric car scheme, travel insurance and emergency care benefits

  • 25 days’ holiday plus bank holidays (with buy/sell options)

  • Genuine opportunities for learning, development and career progression

  • Flexible and hybrid working patterns supported
