General Summary

  • The Pre-Op Interviewer works within the scope of the Registered Nurse (RN) to interview and assess patients prior to procedures, to recognize underlying issues in patient history, and to document and communicate with departments related to the perioperative experience (i.e. Anesthesia, Physician’s office staff, Endo, Surgery, etc) in order to improve patient experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Utilizes critical thinking skills and applies those skills while interviewing the patient and recognizes underlying issues related to the patient’s health history and the procedure to be done.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and follows established hospital policy regarding patient safety measures.
  • Provides quality nursing care by demonstrating a thorough knowledge and understanding of medications, nursing interventions, and patient and family teaching.
  • Performs initial assessment of the patient during the pre-op interview call to the patient, and those interviews conducted face to face.
  • Documents accurately and efficiently all patient care activities, history, medications, and past surgeries or procedures. While talking to the patient, the nurse will determine if the patient’s health history indicates a need for an anesthesia pre-op visit.
  • Communicates to physicians and appropriate team members pertinent patient information in order to improve patient outcomes and quality care.
  • Delegates appropriately to team members while maintaining an atmosphere fostering team work and accountability. Demonstrates understanding of the dynamics of health care, adapting to change in a positive and professional manner in an attempt to support the hospital mission, vision, and values. Incorporates critical thinking into his/her nursing practice and attempts to develop skills and abilities through continued education and various educational opportunities.
  • Interacts professionally with difficult or hostile people/patients.

Education

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing required.


Work Experience

  • One year experience in any of the following: PreOp, OR, Endoscopy, PACU required.


Certification/License

  • Current RN license in the State of Missouri OR Compact State required.

Mental/Physical Requirements

  • Considerable mental concentration required. Able to sit for extended periods of time at a desk and computer. Lifting up to 35 lbs., turning activities and nearly constant walking required. Standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.


Working Conditions

  • May be exposed to infectious disease and hostile persons at times. Minimal physical discomfort.
