Job Description

The primary role of the Facility Engineer at The Charleston Place is to ensure proper maintenance and safety in accordance with hotel standards. The Facility Engineer is the advanced troubleshooter who steps in when a task exceeds the time or expertise of the Duty Engineer

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain accurate records on preventative maintenance and repairs.

  • Perform advanced maintenance, preventative maintenance, inspections, and emergency repairs as assigned.

  • Takeover jobs that exceed the Duty Engineer's time, scope, or abilities.

  • Maintain, repair, and care for the central plant

  • Adhere to safety, security, and emergency procedures, react appropriately during emergencies, and act promptly to correct hazards.

  • Adhere to security procedures concerning the handling of guest room and master keys, security of boiler and electrical rooms, and other engineering areas, proper storage of all chemicals, etc.

  • Listen to and promptly act to resolve guest problems and complaints with a strong emphasis on customer service.

  • Have advanced experience in troubleshooting and repairing electrical systems and plumbing systems, including drain line clearing.

  • Have advanced carpentry skills.

  • Have strong mechanical skills for the operation and repair of hotel equipment, and possess the knowledge and ability to perform a variety of general maintenance repairs.

  • Possess a strong drive to overcome roadblocks and complete all assigned and necessary tasks.

  • Clean and organize the engineering shop and spaces.

  • Keeps the Chief Engineer or Director of Engineering promptly and fully informed of all problems or unusual matters of significance so that prompt corrective action can be taken.

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Know how to operate hand and power tools (drills, saws, drain cleaners, pressure washing equipment, and a wide variety of meters and testers).

  • Read manufacturer instructions, blueprints, diagnostic trees, and have the ability to discern various colors of electrical wiring.

  • Make effective judgments on the various aspects of general repairs and maintenance, and effectively solve guest and operational problems.

  • Operate the work order program to include detailed notes and the status of the job.

  • Operate software programs that control HVAC and monitor the central plant.

  • Communicate effectively with other departments, such as housekeeping and stewarding, to work towards a common goal.

  • Be flexible with the schedule, stay teachable, and have a drive to better oneself.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum 2 years maintenance experience.

  • SC or National CPO Certified.

  • Universal EPA 608 Certified.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a colleague to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

  • Must be able to lift equipment, supplies, etc. of at least 75 pounds.

  • Must be able to resolve problems, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure.

  • The role may require extended periods of time on your feet, especially during peak hotel hours or events.

  • Clear vision is important for reading labels, instructions, blueprints, reports, analyzing data, and guest interactions.

  • Good hearing is necessary for effective communication with the team via radios, with colleagues, guests, and stakeholders.

  • Frequently required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.

  • Regularly required to climb ladders, stand, walk, talk, and hear; frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, and reach with hands and arms.
