BACKGROUND:
Claremont McKenna College (CMC) is a highly selective, independent, coeducational, residential, undergraduate liberal arts college. Established in 1946, CMC is a member of The Claremont Colleges, a consortium of seven independent institutions in Claremont, CA.
CMC is in a significant period of physical growth, with the funding and support of the Board of Trustees to continue to methodically and strategically implement its campus master plan over the next decade and beyond, which will double the footprint of its residential Claremont campus from 75 to over 150 acres (the “Roberts Campus Plan”). The Plan includes the Robert Day Sciences Center (opened in fall 2025 and named a significant U.S. architecture project for 2025) and the Roberts Campus Sports Bowl, a new sports and recreation complex, with Phase 1 expected to be completed in 2026. The Roberts Campus Plan also includes new academic facilities, student life and housing facilities, and enhanced pedestrian walkways and gathering spaces to encourage engagement and interaction.
The Roberts Campus Plan will support improvements in the central and eastern areas of the CMC campus, including the reclamation and development of the 75-acre site to the east of Claremont Boulevard that previously served as a quarry and that has most recently served as an inert debris landfill for The Claremont Colleges.
Initiatives supported by the Campus Master Plan include the possibility for:
- Development of up to eight athletic and practice fields, a new aquatics center, golf practice range, as well as a pedestrian tunnel or bridge across Claremont Boulevard;
- Three pedestrian malls created to encourage interaction, engagement, and public art; and
- Construction of multiple academic, administrative, and campus services buildings, expanded student housing, and a campus green.
