This position serves as the Division Construction Engineer in Division 5. Responsibilities include management and supervision of two Assistant Division Construction Engineers, 5 Resident Engineer Offices, Staff Construction Engineer, Division Environmental Officer and management of the CEI program. Responsible for planning, evaluating and assigning projects, goals and priorities to ensure that project delivery and other department goals and priorities are met. Position will serve as technical expert and will make/recommend final technical decisions on issues related to construction; perform advanced engineering calculations; provide engineering technical assistance; assist in the development and implementation of various Division programs; respond to inquiries from the public, management, news media, etc.

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  NC25 / $89,596 - $201,593

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience managing multiple, complex roadway and bridge construction projects, both conventional and design build, with a broad scope for completeness, compatibility, compliance with engineering principles, standards, codes and design needs
  • Experience in performing engineering analysis and preparing technical, statistical, and managerial reports, presenting the information in a public setting
  • Experience in preconstruction activities in the planning and development of future projects
  • Experience collaborating with others in finding solutions to controversial or sensitive matters that establish precedents
  • Experience reviewing engineered plans and details to determine compliance and compatibility with construction and engineering principles, standards, codes, designs, and statute

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and a minimum of seven years progressive engineering experience including four years of supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications: May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
