Job Summary
ConocoPhillips and its heritage companies have operated in the Permian Basin for almost 100 years. The transformational acquisitions of Concho Resources Inc. and Shell Enterprises LLC’s prolific positions in the Delaware and Midland Basins in 2021 further strengthened the company’s position in the Permian Basin. At year-end 2024, the company held over 1 million total net acres in the Permian Basin.During 2024, net production averaged 775 MBOED.
Position Overview
The Project Well Planner supports the Permian Business Unit by leading multi‑discipline well planning efforts and developing well plans aligned with project objectives, regulatory requirements, and operational priorities. This role partners closely with Development, Wells Engineering, Wells Operations, surface land, and regulatory stakeholders to plan and execute complex multi‑well, multi‑pad drilling programs. The position is responsible for maintaining well plans, timelines, and schedules; communicating risks, cost impacts, and execution status; and applying planning best practices to drive safe, efficient, and cost‑effective outcomes in a fast‑paced horizontal drilling environment.
Key Responsibilities and Skills
Develop and maintain detailed well plans, schedules, and timelines for complex multi‑well and multi‑pad drilling programs
Monitor project progress and clearly communicate status, risks, and cost implications to stakeholders at all organizational levels
Facilitate project team meetings to align on scope, risk, cost, and resource needs
Collaborate with Development, Wells Engineering, and Wells Operations teams to ensure well designs support operational efficiency and performance objectives
Ensure surface layouts and proposals comply with state and federal regulatory requirements and applicable lease obligations
Identify opportunities to improve planning workflows and implement project planning best practices
Apply working knowledge of state and federal regulatory agencies to support permitting and execution activities
Produce accurate, industry‑compliant drafting and design documents using established drafting standards and conventions
Utilize AutoCAD and Geographic Information System (GIS) applications to support well planning and surface design activities
Apply knowledge of well pad civil construction in support of surface planning and layout decisions
Travel to proposed well pad locations to conduct surface inspections as required
Use Microsoft Office applications to support project coordination, reporting, and communication

Basic Requirements
Legally authorized to work in the United States
5 or more years of experience in AutoCAD
5 or more years of experience in project management
5 or more years of experience working directly for an oil and gas operating company
5 or more years of experience supporting unconventional reservoir development
Experience managing multiple projects concurrently
Experience producing drafting and design documents
Demonstrated success working within multi‑disciplinary teams to achieve alignment and results
Ability and willingness to be on call outside of standard working hours
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
Preferred Requirements
Associate of Applied Science in Computer Graphics, drafting related field or foreign equivalent
5 or more years of experience across all aspects of well planning
Experience with Landmark Engineering Data Management (Compass)
Knowledge of well reporting systems such as WellView
Willingness to support continuous improvement efforts and recommend enhancements to well planning practices
Strong collaboration skills and ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced, multi‑priority environment
Commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and operational integrity
