Supervises all the activities performed by the Respiratory Care staff on assigned shift. Ensures adequate staffing and coverage for the level of respiratory care that is needed. Maintains adequate inventory of equipment and supplies. Confers with Administrative Director and Medical Director in planning for Respiratory Care Services being offered. Communicates with attending physicians when necessary to adjust respiratory care to meet patient needs.Major Job Functions

- Participates in the clinical care of patients with high degree of technical proficiency to serve as a mentor, foster teamwork, facilitate revisions of policy and procedures relevant to actual clinical practice, as well as, supporting interactions with other clinical departments / physicians
- Supervises all activities performed by the Respiratory Care staff on assigned shift
- Ensures adequate staffing and maintains a schedule in advance for assigned shift. Provides on-call coverage on rotating basis
- Assists in the review and updates of the Respiratory Care Policy and Procedure Manual to include the Blood Gas Lab
- Assists in development and implementation of the department’s quality improvement monitors and activities.
- Communicates with Medical Director and/or attending physician to clarify or recommend appropriate respiratory care for the patients within the Health System
- Instrumental in investigating and developing new services and techniques reflecting applicable advances in Respiratory Care (in conjunction with Administrative Director and Medical Director)
- Charges for services provided inclusive of use of BCX system. Monitors, educates, and enforces staff compliance with charging for services provided
- Access Patient medication from the Medication Security Area to implement Respiratory Care per hospital and departmental policies and procedures
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:
Education and Formal Training:
Bachelor of Science degree or matriculation into Bachelor’s Degree program within 12 months preferred
Graduate of a COARC Accredited Respiratory Care Program
Must be a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care
Licensed by the NCRCB
BLS certified by the American Heart Association
Work Experience:
Minimum of 5 years in Respiratory Care
3 years of critical care experience
1 year previous employment experience as a clinical supervisor preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
Demonstrates ability to direct, control, and plan activities of other staff personnel
Knowledge of all aspects in respiratory care with a strong emphasis in critical care
Ability to react calmly and maintain composure in stressful situations and when dealing with co-workers, patients, physician, and hospital guests
Ability to communicate verbally and by written memorandum
Knowledgeable of Erickson's Developmental model relative to infants, children, adolescent and all adult age groups in order to provide and/or oversee orientation and training of staff who interact with patients in these age groups
Computer knowledge and skill to analyze data, turn data into useable information, and produce necessary charts and reports
Possess public speaking skills
Possess good time management skills
Knowledgeable in the use of equipment and treatment modalities for patients of all ages
Physical Requirements:
Manual dexterity
Visual acuity
Ability to stand or walk for long periods of time
Position may involve skin, eye, and mucous membranes with blood or other potentially infectious material
