Senior Engineering Roles

The senior engineering ladder bifurcates around the staff level: pre-staff senior is largely about deep individual contribution within a team; staff and above adds cross-team scope, technical strategy, and the "senior IC vs. management" career fork. Most candidates pick a track around the 8-12 year mark.

Compensation at senior+ levels has decoupled from base salary. RSU/equity comp at FAANG-tier companies often exceeds base for senior IC roles, reaching 2-3x base at staff/principal. Pre-IPO equity at well-funded growth-stage companies is more variable but can be the most lucrative outcome of the lot if the IPO lands well.

Beyond comp, the most-valuable filter for senior engineers is whether the company makes promotion past senior visible and achievable. Look for an explicitly published engineering ladder, public examples of recent staff/principal promotions, and engineering leaders who talk about ladder mechanics in calibration cycles.
